Media Release after the event1996 KLEINS JEWELLERS SOUTHERN 80 After God’s Gift’s record shattering efforts in last year’s Morley Ford Southern 80, the 1996 Kleins Southern 80 had some big expectations to live up to. Many of the interstate competitors that attended last year’s race were returning, and 1996 was the year in which three new classes were introduced - Under 13, Under 16 and Under 19 Girls. After taking part in the Saturday morning street parade through Echuca, 25 of the fastest boats entered in the Southern 80 made their way to the Five Mile boat ramp to participate in the Bakers’ Blitz. The fastest boat in the Blitz was Argo, the white and pink Racecraft taking out pole position for Sunday’s race. The Kaal brothers, Phil and Joe, brought the boat down the 20km course in 7.15, towing Brandon Calder and Terry Hughes. Second place in the Blitz went to the Gotta be Crazy team, with Noel Kelly pushing the little 18 foot Stephens down the river in 7 minutes, 22 seconds. Third was the big supercharged Everingham, Thundernuts, who was only one second behind Crazy in 7.23, towing Scott Dominguez and Steve Morley. The first outboard home in the Bakers’ Blitz was Showdown, who finished in a time of 7.28. Only five seconds behind them was Mr. Walker, the revolutionary triple-rig finishing in a time of 7.33; good enough to claim the fifth starting position for Sunday’s big race. Following the two outboard’s were two more supercharged inboards, with Action and Out of Control finishing in sixth and seventh. Two of Victoria’s fastest twin-rigs, Rampage and Mercury Bullet, finished in eighth and ninth, while Harv’s finished in a time of 7.51 to round out the top ten. Reigning Southern 80 champion God’s Gift was the biggest of the Bakers’ Blitz casualties, with turbo problems forcing them to retire. There were only three other retirements for the 1996 Bakers’ Blitz, them being Sniper, Stress and Miscreant. The Torrumbarry Weir boat ramp was a hive of activity throughout Sunday, but the tension was never more evident than at midday, when the Super Class boats enter the water and start preparing for the race. The 1996 event’s biggest hard luck story must belong to the Thundernuts team, who was a very late scratching after a promising third place in the Blitz. Whilst driver Michael Dominguez was warming the motor up, the boat became involved in an accident with another boat, Violator, which resulted in a hole in the big 21 foot Everingham. Both Thundernuts and Violator did not start in the 96 Southern 80; Cyclone Racing and The Thing also failed to make a start. It wasn’t going to bother the Gotta be Crazy team, who managed to steer clear of any troubles, with skiers Adrian Pickering and Wayne Mawer completing the 80km’s in a very slick time of 32 minutes and 33 seconds. That time was five seconds quicker than God’s Gift’s record set the previous year, dispelling everyone’s belief that the 32 minute record would take many years to break. Starting from fourth place, the N.S.W twin-rig, Showdown, roared down the river to take out second place outright, their two skiers Jason Walmsly and Daniel Cotton finishing in a time of 33.08. Another outboard took out third outright, with the Connelly triple-rig Mr. Walker completing the race in a time of 34.08. Top Sydney skiers, Dean Hanckel and Stephen Robertson, were hanging on out the back whilst Stan Najar manoeuvred the boat round the twisting course. Fourth outright was yet another outboard, the 20 foot Bullet twin-rig Rampage towing their two skiers Tim Campbell and Gavin Arnott down the 80km’s in 34 minutes, 16 seconds. Not far behind them was another 20 foot Bullet, Lindsay Beer’s Mercury Bullet, towing the two girls Joanne Hamilton and Leanne Brown down the river in 34.45. Only three seconds behind the black Bullet was Out of Control, Greg Sprunt’s 20 foot Everingham towing young gun’s Shane Floyd and Paul Howard down the river in 34.48. Crazy Horse, a 21 foot twin-turbocharged Everingham, took out seventh outright, finishing in a time of 35.18, whilst pole sitter Argo struggled home in 36 minutes and 29 seconds. After starting from 25th place, God’s Gift had a day to forget, taking one hour and four minutes to complete the 80km’s. Action fared a little worse, problems restricting their time to a leisurely one hour and nine minutes. Expert Classes First, second and third in Super Class was the same as the outright placing’s, with Gotta be Crazy first in 32.33, Showdown coming home second in 33.08 and Mr. Walker third in 34.08. Then followed Crazy Horse, Argo, On Edge, Miscreant, God’s Gift and Action. Moonshot failed to finish, while Cyclone Racing and Thundernuts were scratched. First place in Unlimited Inboard and Outboard was taken out by Rampage, towing Tim Campbell and Gavin Arnott down the river in 34.16. Second place went to Spinner, towing Darren Williams and Brett Jenkins home in 37.20. The blue twin-rig Moovit, towing Brendan James and Shane Clark, finished third in 38.26. Runnin Hot, towing Steve Madsen and David Males, certainly lived up to their name in the MOC Outboard class. They crossed the line in a time of 39.11, becoming the first MOC boat to break the forty minute barrier, and beating Warlord’s ‘92 record time of 40.03. Last year’s winner, Blue Streaker, towed Robert Pirie and John Vessley accross the line in 40.40 to take second. Chainsaw, towing Roy Hamish and Andy Lehman, was third in 41.01. Another record fell in the SMOC Outboard class, with Short Cut, towing Peter Tuohy and Adam Carne, finishing in 41.27 to break Sky Lab’s 1992 record. Crossfire, towing Steve Bayes and Andy Ellis, was also under the old record, finishing in 41.47 to take second. Third, in a time of 42.40, went to Kazz Attack, towing Brad Nation and Craig Heathcote. 8 Litre Inboard was taken out by Status Queensland, towing Geoff Graham and Ricky McKillop down the river in 36.49, good enough for ninth outright. Cut Loose 2, also from Queensland, came home for second, towing Wayne Elliot and Tony Wyatt accross the line in 38.06. Third place went to Stress in 38.24, towing Brian Gebing and Jason Cartledge. Cinders, towing Andrew Drake and Brad Chesser, was the winner of the 6 Litre Inboard class, finishing in 39.10. Second went to Revival, towing Steven Young and Peter Clancy down the river in 40.55. Vengence, towing Scott Barden and David Geddes, was very close behind in third place, finishing in 40.57. Only eleven of the entered boats managed to finish, with 10 retiring and three being scratched. The big yellow Connelly, Thunderduck, took over a minute off the old Stock 6 Litre record, towing Roy Turner and Mal Campbell home in 40.42. A distant second was Stockbroker, towing Mark Sutherland and Wayne Hourigan home in 43.09. The Real McCoy, towing Ian Baker and Garry Peterson, was third in 45.42. 5.2 Litre and 6 Cylinder Inboard was taken out by Kaynet, towing Dave Cowan and Dave Radcliffe accross the line in 42.10. Second went to last year’s winner, Rattler II, towing Johnny and Leslie Tomada home in 42.43. Strongbrew, towing Jamie Connell and Andrew Tomkins, took out third place with a time of 44.47. This class also suffered a high attrition rate, with only six finishing and eight retiring, plus one scratching. Johnson Outboard’s was too good in the 175 Hp. Outboard class, finishing in 44.15 with Darren and Rod Lindsell in tow. Cyclone 175, towing Gavin Bulley and Trudy Hicks, came in for second place in 45.18. Third went to Hammer, towing Nic Groves and Greg Foulds accross the line in 45.24. Mercury Bullet took out first place in Open Women’s, towing Jo Hamilton and Leanne Brown home in 34.45, and placing fifth outright as well. Another twin-rig, the blue 21 foot Bullet Moonlight, took out second place in 39.04, towing Shontelle Campbell and Petra Kell. Instigator was third in 46.03, towing Melissa Foot and Alicia Turner. Under 19 Boys went to Out of Control, with Shane Floyd and Paul Howard finishing in 34.48 to place sixth overall. Ring of Fire, another 21 foot Bullet twin-rig, towed Ben Barker and Gavin Ohlback into second place in 38.08. Missile, the big blue Natwell from New South, towed Tim Galvin and Troy Penny home third in 39.51. One of the class favourties, Top Shot, struggled home for fourth place, while The Axe retired. First place in new class, Under 19 Girls, went to Sledgehammer, towing Rachel Galvin and Emma Carson home in 41.09. Second was Sitting Bullet, finishing in 41.23 with Lee Hicks and Susan Cartwright in tow. Tennesse, towing Kate Glenn and Rachel Bullock, took out third place in 44.10. Macho took out the Under 16 Boys, towing Grant Patterson and James Buser home in 38.14, good enough for fourteenth overall. Second place went to Gambler in 41.26, towing Alex Ross and James Minchin. Amazon Warrior, towing Troy Cardwell and TBA, took out third place in 41.54. The Edge was the first winner of the new Under 16 Girls class, towing Kim Hoskins and Hayley Edwards accross the line in 43.09. Second place went to The Syndicate, towing Shannon Pollard and Bernadette Patterson home in 44.43. OurLab, towing Kylie and Shelly Marsh, finished in third place in 51.01. Jus Walkin, towing Daniel Shipp and Matt Smith, set a new record in the Under 13 Boys class, finishing in 43.21 to take third seconds off My Two Sons record from 1989. Sub Zero, towing Danielle Galvin and Charlie Hunt, came in for second place in 46.54. Third place went to Azatak, towing Andrew Nichoos and Matt Long home in 48.25. Only two entries for the Under 13 Girls class, with Under the Hammer, towing Leanne Edwards and Bethany Pledger, winning in 51.39. Second place went to The Joker, towing Rebecca Nicholds and Lindsay Brown home in 1.02.46. Social Classes Illusion, with Darryn Williams and Wayne Stackpoole in tow, managed to take three seconds off the old Super Social record from ‘91, winning in 37.08. Second place went to The Mover, towing Rob Vereyken and Simon Mitchell accross the line in 41.30. Sponataneous, towing Paul Beck and Caine Powell was third in a time of 41.54. Victory in the 8 Litre Inboard social class went to Cut Loose 2, towing Wayne Elliot and Tony Wyatt home in 43.55. Sonic, towing Jamie Jones and Steve Young, took out second place in a time of 44.45. Third went to Stampede in 45.28, with Damian Miles and David Turner doing the skiing. Simple Minds, with Peter Clancy and Brent Howes in tow, broke the old 6 Litre Inboard record, finishing in 39.56 to take second overall in Social. Hagar, towing Andy Ellis and Scott Lovell, claimed second place with a time of 42.13. Third place went to Missile in 42.15, towing Greg Coombs and Anthony McLaughlin. In the SMOC Outboard Social class, B.L Marine, towing Graeme Lightbody and David Perry, took out first place in a time of 43.34. Hellbent, towing Russ Cicognari and Terry Borland, came in for second in 44.00. Third place went to Bastards Incorporated, towing Darren Purdom and Kevin Kitteringham hoem in 44.17. Sumtoy came in for first place in Stock 6 Litre Social, towing Colin Marks and Mark Trembath home in 44.48. Second place went to Ruff Cut, towing Mark and John Clancy accross the line in 44.59. Jagged Edge, towing Rob Ivancic and Dean Scarse, took out third place with a time of 45.47. Hammer, towing Nic Groves and Anthony Reid, took out the 5.2 Litre Inboard and 175 Hp. Outboard class, winning in a time of 44.56. Touche, towing Leon Danby and Gary Croft, placed second in 46.32. Third place went to Solvogn in 46.37, towing Mark Boyer and Adrian Bishop. In the Open Women’s Social class, Gambler, towing Nicole Mitchell and Emma Carson, were victorious in a time of 46.26. Second place went to The Joker, towing Tania and Christie Boyd into Echuca in 48.10. Attitude, towing C. Witherden and R. Anderson, was third in a time of 50.33. Mygrain, towing Darren Laub and Rob Bertram, finished in a time of 48.45 to win the 6 Litre and 6 Cyclinder Midmount / 140 Hp. Outboard class. Still Knotsure, towing Dean and Chris Whitaker, came in for second place in 49.13. Third place went to the little outboard Flashpoint, towing Owen Mountjoy and Neil Katgert over the line in 50.51. Saturday’s Classes’ Ashley Smith, skiing behind Hitman, took out the Under 10 Tadpoles class in a time of 12.10. Second place went to Chloe Shipp in a time of 13.31, skiing behind Shippreck. Third place, in a time of 13.55, went to Chelsea Nicholds behind Paladin. Insane, towing Greg Glenn and Glenn Casey, were the winners of the Veterans class, finishing in 9.05. Second place went to Misangel, towing Warren Timewell and Geoff Price over the line in 9.20. Right on their hammer was Cut Loose 2, towing Mal Johnson and TBA over the line in 7.21. In the Under 16 Social class, Cut Loose, towing Grant Turner and Micheal Kelly, set a new record, winning in a time of 9.56. Second place went to Cold as Ice, towing Shaun Hewitt and Andrew Morgan over the line in 10.44. Gropa, towing Justin Way and Shannon Wright, finished in 11.55 to take out third place. HPM Frontline continued to dominate the Under 13 Social class, this time Mick Gunther and Mick Long skied home in a winning time of 13.05. Second place went to Slice of Heaven in 15.34, towing Blair Plummer and Ashley Gliddon. Nipple, towing Kirsten Turner and Chelsea Nicholds, finished third in a time of 16.55. Stephen Simmonds, skiing behind Public Enemy, was the winner of the disabled class, finishing in 12.07. Second place went to Steve Davies in 15.09, skiing behind Bad Temper. Duncan Waddell, skiing behind Rip-Off, finished third in a time of 24.48.
