Media Release after the event1995 MORLEY FORD SOUTHERN 80 When people remember the 1995 Morley Ford Southern 80, they’re likely to remember it for one obvious reason - the total domination of the God’s Gift team. They smashed both the Bakers’ Blitz and Outright race records, and left the rest of the competition in their wake. The 1995 Southern 80 boasted one of the hottest Super Class fields for some time. Victoria was strongly represented by boats like Gods Gift, Thundernuts, Action, Merc Bullet, Rampage and Moonshot. New South Wales competitors included ‘94 outright winner, Warlord, as well as Mirage, Stinga, Argo, Wild Turkey and Showdown. Once again, Gotta be Crazy was venturing south from Cairns, while On Edge and Cyclone Racing were two other Unlimited competitors from Queensland. Bakers Blitz Graham Ritchie’s God’s Gift, sporting a twin-turbocharged, intercooled, fuel injected 481 Rodeck, prepared by observer Stuart Thomas, managed to slice eleven seconds off the previous Bakers Blitz record. Skiers, Jamie Oliver and Nathan Glynn, crossed the finish line in a time of 7.03, comfortably ahead of the rest of the field. Argo, the twin-turbocharged 21ft. Racecraft, sneaked in for second place, finishing in 7.22. Driving was Phillip Kaal, observer was Joe Kaal, while Damian Kaal and Brandon Calder were the guys doing all the hard work out the back. Defending winner, Warlord, came in for third place, matching Argo’s time of 7.22. Steve Thompson was behind the wheel of the 21ft. Bullet, with Jeff Lord observing and Scott Kell and Rory Brown were the skiers. Noel Kelly’s Gotta be Crazy, towing Adrian Pickering and Wayne Mawer, finished in fourth place, recording a time of 7.31. Two seconds behind was Showdown, with Daniel Cotton and Jason Walmsly crossing the finish line in 7.33. Sixth place went to Out of Control, towing two Under 19’s competitors, Shane Floyd and Paul Howard, home in 7.51. Stinga, the beautiful orange Connelly powered by a twin-turbocharged Chev, towed Shane Helson and Steve Twitchen into seventh place in 7.53. Moonshot, towing Jamie Graziano and Corey Bacon, came in for eighth place, finishing in 7.56. Rampage, towing Tim Campbell and Gavin Arnott, finished in 8.02 to claim ninth, while Spontaneous, towing Mark Wickens and Wayne Duggan, claimed tenth place. Thundernuts, Mirage, Action, Mr. Walker and Wild Turkey all failed to finish the 20 km Bakers’ Blitz course, while 8 Litre entry Wahoo was a late scratching. Outright Placings It was widely considered that only mechanical difficulties could rob the God’s Gift team of outright victory, such was their dominance in yesterday’s Blitz. They had the coveted number 201, 80 kilometres of clear water, and the race record in their sights. God’s Gift didn’t just break the ‘92 race record of 33.34 set by Thundernuts, they smashed it, becoming the first boat to break the 33 minute barrier. Driven by Graham Ritchie, with Stewie Thomas observing and Nathan Glynn and Jamie Oliver skiing, they crossed the line in 32.38, nearly a minute ahead of their nearest rival. Warlord came in for second place, with Scott Kell and Rory Brown finishing the course in a time of 33.30, four seconds under the old race record. Steve Thompson was behind the wheel of the twin-rig Bullet, while Jeff Lord was observing. Ken Broughton’s Mirage, the beautiful grey twin-turbocharged Connelly, came in for third outright. Starting from position 20, they scorched down the river, recording a time of 33.31, one second behind Warlord and three seconds under the old record. Observing was John Hickey, while Craig Brown and Steve Rowe were the skiers. The twin-rig Showdown, driven by Ian Tricker, with Steve Cotton observing and Daniel Cotton and Jason Walmsley skiing, came in for fourth outright, finishing the 80 km’s in a time of 33.42. Lester Freemantle’s Moonshot, finished in fifth outright, recording a time of 33.48. The team was only six seconds behind Showdown, with Gary Treadwell observing and Jamie Graziano and Corey Bacon skiing. Sixth outright went to the Queensland entry, Cyclone Racing, driven by Gavin MacKay, with Darren Catalan observing and Mark Pickering and American Corey Cook skiing. They finished in 34.15, after starting from position 28 in their first Southern 80. BP Merc Bullet claimed seventh outright, finishing in a time of 34.25.
